Bird Watching
This area of Anglesey provides lots of opportunities for birdwatching, from watching the oystercatchers on Traeth Mawr in the evening to observing the many rare birds that stop off at Cemlyn beach during their migration.
Many seabirds can be seen in the harbour and along the headlands at Cemaes. Watch out for gulls swooping for your lunch! Gannets, Gulls, Guillemots, Fulmar and Kittiwake are in abundance and if you are lucky sitings of chough or raven. Curlew and Whimbrel can be seen on the surrounding fields when the tide is high, whilst heron, redshank and oyster catchers can be seen at low tide on the beach.
You could also venture further afield to Cemlyn Nature Reserve which is run by the North Wales Wildlife Trust, which is home to an important tern colony in the summer months. We have been fortunate enough to be given permission to reproduce the section on Cemlyn from the book “Best Birdwatching Sites in North Wales” by Alan Davies and Owen Roberts. Please feel free to download it from the link below. Alan also runs Birdwatching trips with Ruth Miller around North Wales and much further afield, see their website for details.
The gallery above shows birds seen at Cemlyn between April and May 2019.
