Menter y Pentre Cemaes

Menter y Pentre Cemaes Village Venture is Anglesey’s first community shop. It provides tables for local crafters to sell their products, and sells secondhand books, jigsaws, and so much more.

The table holders, each pay a fee for the space and a percentage of sales to the shop. Monies raised pay for rent, power etc. And the really nice part is, profits help to fund local events and projects. The shop supports “Plastic Free Anglesey” which promotes eradication of single-use plastic and the environmental litter it produces. Delicate goods can be wrapped in tissue or pre-used bubblewrap as requested.

The shop goes from strength to strength and couldn’t survive without the support of both locals and visitors; crafters have a place to showcase their work too.

An open AGM allows anyone to see how funds are raised and spent.

History

In 2009 a group of enthusiastic villagers, mostly crafters, approached the Chairman of Llanbadrig Community Council, asking to rent the former double fronted newsagents in Cemaes Bay High Street that had been standing empty for some time.

The Community Council Chairman negotiated with the estate agent with whom the property was for sale and a deal was struck to secure the property.

Once this was done, volunteers set about cleaning, painting the shop with donated paint. Electrical work and a new carpet laid saw the shop open its doors.

In December 2017, the shop was closed for three months when the Community Council arranged for major renovations to be undertaken. There are photo albums on the Facebook Page.

A grant from Horizon Nuclear Power allowed new bookcases and tables to be purchased which has helped the fresh look achieved upon re-opening.
